During the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, the approach roads crossed the 150 year old railway tunnel. To protect the tunnel, piled abutments were constructed either side to support a road bridge. During the driving of the piles CMCS monitored the effects o the tunnel lining. The results showed that the peak particle velocities (PPV) were greater from the trains than from the piling.

CMCS monitored the vibrations caused by the traffic and the use of a heavy breaker within 5 m of some of the support columns of the elevated section of the Harrow Road - no harmful effects were recorded.

The photograph and sketch opposite illustrate a project where CMCS have supplied vibration monitoring equipment and advice on a new development in Edinburgh.

Peak Particle Velocities allowed vary from: 2 - 5 - 10 - 40 mm/second depending on the state and historic value of the building. The larger value relates to concrete and steel commercial buildings. (Human response to vibration requires additional consideration).
