Tunneling for the Docklands Light Railway was stopped from proceeding under the Mansion House by an Act of Parliament and could only continue after suitable monitoring systems had been installed to determine the effect of the tunneling. The consultant approached G Price and I F Wardle and jointly designed an automatic system to record the effect remotely in real time. Information from the system was used to quantify both the immediate and long-term differential movements imposed on the structure due to forming platform and running tunnels under the northeast corner.
