Yarm Viaduct (shown in the photos below) was fitted with a simple automatic monitoring and alarm system using both EL beams and water levels, while the pier foundations of the 150 year Rail Viaduct were strengthened. The modular design of the system allowed the instruments to be moved to new piers as the work progressed. The system operated for about 18 months while the contractor strengthened 12 of the piers.
The systems can detect either vertical tilting or settlement and on the Borough Market viaduct (below left) was used to warn of movements while archaeological excavations were opened close to the supporting columns. On the Waterloo viaduct (right) the system was used to warn of movement as the Jubilee Line extension was driven under it.
movement as the Jubilee Line extension was driven under it. In addition to warnings of excessive movements via mobile phones or computers, warning messages can be sent directly by the loggers to a display unit that holds the messages until an acknowledgement button is pressed. These units are designed for use in signal boxes, or busy offices, where fax machines may be in use or out of paper. Fail-safe options are also available for use that involves 'watchdog computers' programmed to contact the loggers regularly to ensure they are operational. Systems can be bought or hired as required. |
