The photograph opposite shows the original Mansion House, the centre of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) estate. The site is situated within the wood south east of Garston alongside the M1. As well as offices BRE comprises of engineering workshops and test facilities associated with most aspects of the Built Environment, including Geotechnical, Structural and Material sciences.

CMCS occupy one of the old listed buildings on the site where it calibrates, manufactures and tests its monitoring systems.
In recent years private organisations have been allowed on to the site and the original Government Research Departments have been privatised to form BRE Limited.
In addition to excellent research laboratories the site has suburb recreational facilities including tennis courts, a five-a-side football pitch, cricket nets and gymnasium making for a pleasant and productive work environment.

The new commercially run private organisations add to the range of services and expertise readily available to satisfy the varied needs of the Construction Industry.

Shown in the photograph opposite is the large constant temperature laboratory in which full scale loading tests can be carried out on structures. Other facilities include load machines up to 10,000 kN, concrete and other material testing facilities, building component apprisal, as well as EMC testing facilities of electronic equipment.
